Episode 1.09 - Ashes to Ashes
Air Date: November 27, 2007

The Devil buys a toolbox, and gives it to Sam at the Work Bench. He tells Sam it’s for him to go work on some plumbing.

Sam arrives at an apartment. Mimi lets him in to fix her dishwasher. While looking at the dishwasher, Sam asks about her call to the Work Bench. Mimi explains that her boyfriend takes care of the repairs. She shows Sam a photo of herself and “Jerry” in Cabo. “Jerry” is the Devil.

The boys discuss Andi’s actions, and Sam’s chances of getting her back. Her glibness makes Sock says she’s acting like “a dude”. Sam’s obsession with it, is his acting like “a chick”.

Sam finds himself, suddenly, inside a coffin. The Devil lifts the lid, and escorts him through a funeral home. He deflects Sam’s questions about Mimi. He says that Sam’s assignment is a soul named Dennis Greyson, a funeral home director in life, who made extra money selling body parts from cadavers in his mortuary. Ten years ago, he was discovered and executed. He was cremated, so he has come back as a ghost. The Devil explains that this is because his body was destroyed, and can’t “come back” with him. The Devil hands Sam a list of the people that the Greyson is after. He says to concentrate on Sarah Negly. Find her, find the soul.

Okay. So, that would mean that all the previous “souls” were corporeal because they were in their bodies. Most of them, though, had been dead so long that they would have decayed too much to come back intact. So, there would have to be some magic to make them appear as in life. This mythology, then, says that, if the bones are intact, the soul can come back and look as the person did in life. Does this make sense to anyone else? Oh well…

Realizing that Sam knows “Jerry personally, Mimi asks for information. She believes that he’s not really an importer, because he won’t talk about his work. Instead, she wonders if he works for the government.

Sam tells the boys how he spent the whole night telling Mimi how great “Jerry” is.Sam opens the box to find the vessel –a “hairdryer”. As the boys leave to find the lead, Ben tries to keep them from seeing his grandmother. She spots Ben, though. When she meets the boys, she’s speechless, and gives Sam the evil eye, even as they exit the Work Bench. Ben tells Sam that his grandmother has “the eye”, that she can spot evil spirits. So, she, apparently can tell that Sam is in league with the Devil. It turns out that Ben

Sarah Negly. The man at the door says that his mother, Sarah, died a few years ago. He knows that Greyson had cut up his mother, and sold pieces of her body. Suddenly, the house shakes, and the boys are forced out. Sarah’s urn is knocked off the mantle, and the ashes swirl around Mr. Negly, killing him.

So, the soul needs the ashes of the dead to come back and kill others. Sock tries to get Sam to be more positive, and to ask Andi out again, and again, until she wears down. He lifts Sam up by the shoulders and pushes him into the store to talk to Andi. Sam asks her to a movie. She can’t. Another weekend. Ummm… still can’t. Ben overhears, and tells Andi that it’s cool that she acts like a guy. He tells her that she shouldn’t be so dismissive with Sam. She seems to give in to the idea that she might be able to give Sam another chance.

Sam has a list of all the people that Greyson had cremated. So, they go out to collect the ashes of all the victims to protect their families. As Sock gets them into the house with the promise of free carpet, Ben and Sam collect the ashes in individual Ziplocks. At the end of the day, Ben excuses himself to go to some family party. Sam and Sock question why they can’t go with him. Ben explains that he’s worried about upsetting his grandmother anymore, and becoming more of the black sheep of the family than he is. He was supposed to become a priest.

The Devil shows up in Sam’s driveway, and scolds him for collecting the ashes. He tells Sam to stop worrying about the living, and to concentrate on finding the soul. Then, he asks Sam what he’s been saying to Mimi. He says that she’s left him some unusual messages.

Dad finds Sam in his room, eyeing the necklace that Andi refused on her birthday.

At Mimi’s apartment, as Sam is “working” on the washing machine, Sock . Mimi is crying, because “Jerry”. Sock tries to talk her into going out with them to Ben’s family party. There, Sock and Sam tell Ben they need his grandmother to “see” who Greyson is going to attack next.

Nana looks at Sam’s palm. She shouts “diablo” as she stabs Sam’s hand with a fork.

Mimi invites Sam in to put treat his hand. She asks him if she should break it off with “Jerry”, after 20 years. He tells her she should leave him. Then, the building shakes. Sock asks, and Mimi says her mother’s ashes are in the laundry room.

The boys go into the room, and the doors and windows slam shut. Sam spots the urn, but spills it, releasing the ashes. As the soul-affected ashes draw toward Sock, Sam wets them with one of the washing machine supply hoses. They vacuum it up, along with the soul, into a wet/dry vac. As they head back to Ben’s family party to get the vessel, the souls knocks the car about a little. Sock reluctantly reveals that he left the ashes of the other victims were still in the trunk –with the SOUL. The pounding of the soul becomes strong enough to make the car fishtail.

Ben, in the car with his grandmother, tells her he’ll be right back. Sock and Sam show up, and the three run into the hall to find the hair dryer. As ben’s grandmother looks on, the ashes escape the trunk of Sock’s car. A large cloud enters the hall, but Sam wields the hairdryer. Turning it backwards, he captures the soul, but the ashes go all over the boys.

Ben’s grandmother walks in, crosses the boys, and tells Ben that he’s doing God’s work. Ben says she’s worth millions.

The Devil comes into the Work Bench to grill Sam about Mimi. He says she’s leaving for New Mexico to move on with her life, and he seems upset about it. Sam says he must really care for her.

At Mimi’s moving sale, Mimi introduces Sam to her daughter, Cady. Ben says Cady must be the Devil’s daughter, but Sam doesn’t think so. Sam says he’s going to call Cady, and move on. The boys put on goggles, Sam grabs a hose, Sock says a few words, and the boys reverse the wet/dry vac, releasing the ashes into the lake.
