Writers’ Strike Officially Over!
Last night, at 6PM PST, 92.5% of the 3,775 writers voting, voted ‘YES’ to ending the 100 day old strike. We all knew this was coming. The CW had just issued its plans for the rest of 2008, and the industry seemed to have already breathed a giant corporate sigh of relief. The governing board for the Writers’ Guild of America had unanimously approved the agreement on Sunday.
While everyone is going back to work, today, there is still one last piece to fall into place. The union must still ratify the contract. This should happen any day now. Currently, though, most industry members and watchers are just happy the strike is over. I’m certain writers, and the many other entertainment workers, and all their families, are elated. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers estimated that writers had lost around $285 million dollars (US) worth of pay, during the strike. Other workers had lost over $500 million dollars in wages.
Notable in the agreement reached, last week, is that the increase in the writers’ cut of digital distribution beyond that made in the recent Director’s Guild agreement. These agreements certainly pave the way for smoother talks between producers and the Actors’ Guilds, whose contracts end June 30, 2008.
