Ray Wise Interview with The Arrow at 2003 Fantasia Film Festival

by Jonathan on February 17th, 2008

Ray Wise in Jeepers Creepers 2About five years ago, Ray Wise spoke with John Fallon of The Arrow, at the 2003 Fantasia Film Festival. Ray had just completed Jeepers Creepers 2, and Dead End. They talk a lot about those projects, as well as Ray’s early years, and his very memorable time in Twin Peaks.

Interestingly, Ray Wise reveals that Jeepers Creepers 2 director Victor Salva, of called him, only three days before shooting opened, to see if he would take over the lead role. His simile-filled plea was so moving, Ray agreed to take the role, not having seen the script.

He notes a few interesting points about his career:

  • Being typecast after Twin Peaks.
  • Playing father roles, after a certain age.
  • Over a decade later, still answering questions about Twin Peaks.
  • No one, but Salva, thought Ray would pull off the farmer role in Jeepers Creepers 2.
  • JC2 was more than a slasher. It had a point, a moral dilemma that had to be resolved.

To me, the most interesting thing he says in the interview, is his answer to John’s question about method acting. His vision of getting into a role seems to ring true with the way he looks when he portrays a character, “I’m a firm believer that the camera, that’s only a few feet away from you, looks right into your brain and soul almost, looks right into your eyes and sees what registers in the back wall of your retinas, so I like to have the right thoughts in my mind so that it catches the right thought in my eyes.” The man certainly seems to believe that he is the character he’s playing.
