Reaper Recap: 1.12 - Unseen

1.12: Unseen
Airdate: 20 March 2008.

Director: Victoria Hochberg
Writer: Craig DiGregorio

We watch as Sock tries desperately to be at “home” in the Work Bench. Frustrated, he calls Sam. Sam tells Sock that he can’t move back into his house, as Cady snores “demonically” on the bed.

Sam and Cady meet Ben and Sock at the bowling alley. Ben and Sock show up in “costume”. They’re very suave. The action turns into a bowling montage that would make the 80s proud. Cady, admittedly a bowling newbie and who bowls “granny style”, somehow bowls a strike every frame. The montage ends with Cady throwing a gutterball, that, right at the end, somehow gets back onto the lane, and hits the “pocket”. When it appears that she left the 10 pin, her gaze seems to cause the last pin to fall, though.

At the Work Bench, Sam is expressing his dismay that Cady seems to be turning a bit “scary”, noting her crazy snoring, and her perfect first game of bowling. Sock and Ben defend her, saying there’s no way she’s the spawn of Satan.

Andi tells Sam he owes her a coffee. As they go to get some, Ben and Sock wonder if Sam’s problem with Cady is really because he still has feelings for Andi. In their store meeting, Ted talks about missing merchandise. He tells them to keep their eyes open, and that they’re going to put an extensive camera system in the store.

Sock takes the boys to a new apartment that he has already leased. It’s $1200/month, though, and he needs Ben and Sam to be his roommates. In fact, he forged their signatures on the lease. Sam is resistant, until Sock tells him he owes him, because he’s been helping Sam send escaped souls back to Hell. Sam relents.

Sam tells his parents that he’s moving out, and they seem a little too protective, since he’s 21. They give their blessing in the end, though.

The Devil shows up in Sam’s room. He keeps telling Sam he’s a big boy, now that he’s moving out on his own. Sam rebels against the obvious patronizing, and sarcasm in the the Devil’s voice. The Devil tells Sam about the latest soul, Herbert Scrim, a hermit, and a serial killer, who killed anyone that ran “through his neck of the woods.” His “hunting ground” is now a city park, so there are lots of targets for him. He tells Sam that he can find Herbert in the woods, in the park. He also warns him to be careful, because, when he was alive, he was hardly ever seen. The Devil refuses to give him more details about Herbert, telling him it’s all about Sam now, “and [his] newfound confidence.”

Josie and Andi show up at the new apartment. Josie asks where Cady is, and Sam tells them that he hasn’t told her that he’s moved, yet. Andi looks shocked –maybe, relieved, in a way.

Josie and Andi go to Booze, talking about Sam and Cady, and Andi’s feelings for Sam. Josie thinks Andi should tell Sam about Cady’s psycho visit.

The boys watch a news report about murder victims in the park. The vessel is disguised as a housewarming gift on the kitchen counter: a Magic Bullet –the infamous countertop, “functional, and fun” food processor. Sam turns it on, and it sends out its blades like an insane, deadly, “boomerang”.

Cady shows up at the Work Bench. She tells Sam that his parents told her that he had moved out. She’s slightly worried, but Sam assures her that things are good between them. She wants to give Ted “something to look at” in the new cameras. When they kiss, a full-glass screen door begins to crack. Eventually, it shatters. She looks genuinely surprised. When she asks Sam about having dinner that night, Sam makes an excuse.

At the apartment, Sock shows the other boys the new Wii. Suddenly, the entertainment system loses power. The boys go to find a neighbor for help. Steve and Tony, the gay couple next door, come over and help them find the breaker box. They comment on how empty the boys’ fridge is, and offer to make them dinner, tomorrow night.

The boys go out into the woods at the park to look for the soul. Ben climbs a tree to look around, but falls, tumbling through what looks like thirty to forty feet of branches. He hits the ground right next to a dead jogger, whom they had just seen running, a few minutes before. Herbert must be there.

Later, at the Work Bench, Sam suggests they jog through the park to draw Herbert out. Sock implies that it’s crazy to jog through the creepy woods where the soul’s been killing people. Then, he replies, “Okay. Let’s go.” As they run through the park, Sam’s phone rings. It’s Cady. He doesn’t answer. Just then, they hear a woman scream. They rush to find where a woman’s scream came from. They find the woman, lying on the ground with contusions on her neck. Sam notices a trap, and Sock is caught in one of those classic staples of cartoons, the foot “loop” that tightens around your ankle and dangles you from a tree. As Sock hangs from the trap, Sam calls Herbert out. An invisible Herbert grabs Sam by the neck. Herbert is invisible, or, rather, transparent. Three dogs running to where the boys are cause Herbert to drop Sam and run away. The dogs rush to a tree, that Herbert has climbed to escape the dogs. A woman rushes over and apologizes for her dogs’ scaring them. The boys are obviously relieved, though.

The boys are collecting paintball equipment at the Work Bench to use to make Herbert visible. Ted pages Sam for help installing security cameras. Suddenly, Sam slips and falls, but lands in an elementary school room. The Devil chides him for needing his help. He offers Sam a pair of glasses that will help him see Herbert, and “the true face of evil.” When Sam starts to put the glasses on, presumably to look at the Devil, the Devil stops him, saying that it would be too scary. Sam turns down the glasses, though, saying he doesn’t need his help.

Cady asks Andi if anything is up with Sam. Andi tells her that Sam always acts weird, so not to worry about it. Cady still thinks Sam is having second thoughts about her. She also asks if Andi had anything to do with Sam’s move. Andi assures her that she and Sam are just friends, and no more than friends.

The boys show up at Steve and Tony’s. Sock is wearing clothes that Steve and Tony had helped him pick out at the store. (Is someone finding a new “mom” in the neighbor couple?) Sam notices photos of Steve and Tony doing charity work. Steve and Tony begin serving them hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Steve helps Sam get a stain out of his shirt, and tells him about the security cameras he has installed, as well as the motion detectors that protect them from things they can’t see. Sam’s eyes light up.

After hours, the boys gear up at the Work Bench, as usual. The next morning, Ted notices that his security cameras are missing from the Work Bench.

The boys set up at the park. There is a charity run about to start, in the park, when they arrive. Sock stays behind to slow them down. When the motion detectors begin to light up, near Sam and Ben, they realize that Sock has the vessel. They pelt him with paintballs, and Sock shows up with the Magic Bullet. When Herbert lets go of Sam to go after Sock and Ben, Sock tosses him the Magic Bullet, and he catches the soul with it.

Ted is walking through the store asking someone to tell him what is happening with his cameras. Andi finds Sam, and asks how things are with Cady. She tells Sam that Cady visited her, and warns him to be careful, because she gets a weird vibe from her.

Sam goes home to find the Devil playing with the Wii in the living room. He asks if something is wrong with Sam and Cady. Sam asks if Cady is the Devil’s daughter. He replies, “No.” He tells Sam that, if he really likes her, he shouldn’t let anything get in the way. He gives Sam the glasses, saying that he might need them again to see someone’s true colors. Sam goes to meet Cady. When he arrives, he looks at her, from a distance, through the special glasses, but she looks normal.

Cady says she needs a little space, and is going to go to New Mexico, and spend some time with her mom.

Ben and Sock are playing games on the Wii, and snacking on crab dip. They reassure Sam that Cady will come back, when she misses him. They tell Sam that his shirts are over at Steve and Tony’s. He goes over, and lets himself into their apartment. He hears tools in the bathroom. When he looks for them, he sees them using sanders to sand away their demon horns. Shocked, he rushes back to his apartment, and tells Sock and Ben.
