Episode 1.15 - Coming to Grips
Airdate: 29 April 2008

Sam is preparing dinner for Andi. A demon attacks him. It’s Tony, who asks Sam why he betrayed them. Sam explains that he was tricked by the Devil. Tony releases his grip on Sam’s throat, and begins crying.

Tony is making the dinner. He tells Sam that he’s going to leave the apartment, drop out of society, and move into a cabin that he and Steve had. Andi gets to Sam’s door, and overhears his talking. She comes in, and asks who he was talking to. Sam covers, as Tony, clinging –off-screen- to the ceiling.

Sam and Andi are walking across the parking lot to work. Sam catches up to Ben, and see he’s watching Sock kissing Josie as she drops him off at work. Sock tells Ben not to mope about not having a girlfriend of his own, and snags the “list” from Ben’s back pocket. Ben’s list includes: funny, smart, piercing green eyes, independently wealthy, a trained masseuse, trained in mixed martial arts, and a fan of Sue Grafton’s writing. They tell Ben to kill the list, because the such a woman doesn’t exist.

Sam spots Andi cooling off –seductively- in front of a fan. Suddenly, Sam is whisked off by the Devil to a soccer park. The Devil points out several children playing. The soul, currently known as Jack King, is the father to hundreds of children. Jack “runs” a sperm bank, and is a complete narcissist.

The vessel shows up at the Work Bench –a little rod, that happens to be a switch-scythe. It magically opens to a large, reaper-size scythe. Andi spies Sam and Sock inspecting, and playing, with the scythe.

Sam and Sock go to the sperm bank, and ask to become donors. Andi has followed them there. They walk into Jack’s office, Sam holding the scythe. He backs Jack up to the window. From Andi’s perspective, we see the scythe take off Jack’s head.

Jack’s headless body attacks the boys. Sam manages to chop off his hand, but Jack doesn’t disappear. Then, Sam touches the scythe tip to Jack’s body. It goes away in a cloud of smoke, then Sam takes it to Jack’s head. As Sam and Sock head down the corridor. Then, we see a hand walking down the hallway, not noticed by the boys.

Ben talks to a co-worker, a Brit named Sarah. She tells him that he should keep his list, and that soul-mates exist. She says he just needs to go find her. As Sarah finishes her romantic speech about soulmates, Ben seems to beam at her –although it’s not entirely clear whether he’s now into her. Sarah looks at the list and says she has almost none of the listed qualities. Ben looks off, “Oh.”

Sam walks into the breakroom with flowers for Andi. When he comes up behind her, she backhands him in the face, sending him to the floor. She confronts him about chopping some guy’s head off. Sam explains that it’s his other “job”, and it’s not what it looks like. She says she has no option but to call the police. Sam begs her to let him talk to his “boss”, and he can explain.

Sam delivers the vessel to Gladys, at the DMV. He has put a note to the Devil on it, and Glady questions what it is. As he leaves the DMV, Sam finds himself in an adult video store, and the Devil is there. The Devil says he didn’t get all of Jack. He “snaps” the clerk unconscious, then shows Sam video footage of Jack in the video store. Jack’s hand was enough for him to regenerate a whole new Jack –”like a starfish”. Sam tells the Devil that Andi saw him chop Jack’s head off, and is going to the cops. The Devil offers Sam a deal –he can tell Andi, but Sam will owe him a really big favor, someday, maybe a bad one.

In the apartment, Ben and Sock give Sam a hard time about making a deal with the Devil. Sarah walks out of the bathroom, and asks Ben for conditioner. Sam and Sock ask about Sarah, and Ben explains that he married her! She needed a green card, and paid him $1600, in return.

Ben and Sock are with Sam as he’s about to tell Andi about his deal with the Devil. He tells her that he’s a “bounty hunter for Hell”. She doesn’t remotely believe him. Before she leaves Booze, she says there are three hours left, before she goes to the police.

Sam goes, scythe in hand, to collect Jack, again. He sneaks around Jack’s office, looking around. The Devil shows up and tells him that Jack won’t come back there, because he knows that Sam is on to him. He tella Sam that the deal with Andi is too much of a distraction, and that he’ll just have to handle it himself. We see Andi, getting ready to use her wireless phone, when she’s suddenly snatched away, as her phone drops to the ground.

Sam tells Sock and Ben that Andi is going to the police. He’s worried about how the Devil will “take care” of the problem. Sock and Ben reveal that they kidnapped Andi. She’s tied up in Sock’s trunk. They decide to take her to Tony’s cabin to prove that he’s working with the Devil.

They arrive at the cabin, and see a caravan of demons leaving. Tony reveals his demon form to her –and to Sock and Ben for the first time- and Andi runs off. They hear Sock’s car start up and drive off. Oops!

Tony drives the boys back to the Work Bench, and tells Sam just to be patient with Andi. He asks Sam if he loves her, and he says, “Yeah.”

In the breakroom, the boys discuss Andi’s not showing up for work. They figure she has just freaked out a bit.

The boys go to the hospital, where Jack’s dayplanner indicated he would be. The Devil meets them in the parking lot. He has put Andi in the trunk of a car, and hands Sam a key, telling him it’s his “last chance to get it right”. Sam lets Andi out. She believes him, but says she’s afraid of Sam. She leaves.

Ben nervously asks a nurse where the maternity ward is. He sees that she’s reading a Sue Grafton novel. She beams a little, when he asks her what she thinks about mixed martial arts. Ahhhh. Sweet.

Sock and Sam trap Jack in a room. Jack grabs a saw, cuts his hand off, and sends it into a vent in the ceiling. Sock goes after it. As Jack attacks Sam, knocking the scythe out of his hands, Andi shows up. Jack goes after her, but she punches him, grabs the scythe, and, mostly accidentally, captures Jack with the tip of the scythe. [Welcome to the Scooby Gang.]

Instead of finding a hand, Sock and Ben find a complete Jack clone, naked, of course. Sock is traumatized by touching him. Down the corridor, though, Sam nails him with the scythe. Sam returns to the operating room, but Andi is gone.

Sarah shows up at Booze, toting new “Ebay” rings. Ben tells her about Cassidy, the woman from the hospital. She tells him that she’s happy for him, “but no!” They threaten each other with going to the authorities. She leaves, seemingly leaving a dray. Whether for real love, or just to keep appearances up for Immigration, she is unwilling to let Ben date Cassidy.

Andi shows up at Booze. She tells Sam that she understands that he was just protecting her. As Sam walks to the bar, he’s suddenly at Tony’s cabin –with the Devil. The Devil tells him he needs an inside man, someone who can get information for him, from inside the circle. Sam is not happy about spying on Tony, but the Devil says they can discuss the consequences for Sam and Andi, if he refuses to help him. At that, Tony comes out and invites Sam inside.
