Episode 1.16 - Greg Schmeg
Air Date: 6 May 2008

Sock lends Sam his Cadillac –foists it upon him- to use for his date with Andi.

Sam and Andi are talking and kissing in Sock’s car. As she’s asking him for information about soul-hunting, they hear a noise. Sam turns on the headlights revealing a masked man with a chainsaw. He attacks, making a mess of the car. Sam is able to start the car and drive away.

Sock is cool about the Sockmobile, at least toward Sam. Sock is proud that his car kept Sam alive, unlike how his Prius would have worked. Sarah drives up, and chides Ben for not making the bed in the morning, despite the fact that he sleeps on the floor.

Believing that the chainsaw maniac is a soul, Sock and Sam go to the DMV. Sock gives Gladys an estimate for repairs. They also ask for a vessel to capture the soul. Gladys insists that it must be just a random act of violence, not a soul.

Back at the Work Bench, Sam and Sock see Andi talking to Greg –her old boyfriend. Ben comes in with a photo of the chainsaw guy. It’s the guy that Sam and Andi saw, and he has killed 30 people. Andi apologizes to Sam about Greg, and explains… family problem. Sam says it’s okay for her to go have coffee with Greg, that evening to talk about his problems. Sam sneezes, and asks if she’s wearing cologne. Andi says it must have come from Greg, and that he wears way too much of it.

At lunch, Cassidy asks Ben why, after five dates, they’ve only gone out together at the hospital cafeteria –never in public. He confesses to her about Sarah and their “green card” marriage. She agrees to see him, still, but that they have to go someplace new.

Sam is pacing, waiting for Andi’s call. It’s several minutes past 9 PM, when she said she’d call. He looks in the fridge and finds a suburban street scene –of course. He stands up to find himself on the street with the Devil. He gives Sam a large knife, but it’s not a vessel, just a present that he might need sometime. The Devil denies knowing about a soul with a chainsaw. The Devil says he hates words like “trust”, “honesty”, and “integrity”, because they’re always fraudulent. The Devil leads Sam into a house. “I show you this because I care. Also, I kind of enjoy it.” In the living room, Sam finds Andi and Greg making out on the couch. Sam, of course, is still holding his new, big knife. After innocently scaring them a bit, Sam drops the knife and walks out. Andi comes after him, apologizing, and saying that she doesn’t even know how she got there. Sam, though still visibly disappointed, seems to believe her.

At the morning staff meeting, Ted invites Sarah up. She tells everyone that she and Ben are having a baby. Outside the office, she tells Ben that the baby is Esteban’s –her boyfriend who is a trapeze artist in Cirque du Soleil. She explains that she can have a boyfriend, because Esteban is discreet. Esteban couldn’t marry her, because he’s married.

Greg shows up at the Work Bench and asks Andi out for coffee –sproing!- she agrees.

In the condo parking garage, the chainsaw murderer is waiting for the boys, and attacks them in Sock’s car. Sock starts the car, and drives off, eventually knocking him off when they go under an overhang.

The boys go to the bar, but Sam suddenly finds himself on the roof of a building –with the Devil. To Sam’s repeated insistence that the killer is a soul, the Devil non-chalantly –wiht impeccable Ray Wise grace- changes the subject. “Seriously? Weird!” He tells Sam to look through a telescope, where he sees Andi and Greg on a park bench. As Sam is looking, we hear a rifle bolt action, and the scope becomes a telescopic rifle sight –on a rifle. He tells Sam he could kill him. Greg sold his soul to the Devil to get the power to make her date him –”Jedi mind trick” like.

Sam sees Andi and Greg in front of the Work Bench. Greg’s cologne makes Sam sneeze, as soon as they catch up to each other. Andi tells Sam that she has to break up with him. “It’s not you, Sam. It’s me.” Sam tells her about Greg’s selling his soul to have the power over her.

Sam goes to the break room and kicks the locker. He tells Sock about Greg’s deal with the Devil. Sam tells Sock to clock out so they can go make Gladys give him a vessel to capture the soul.

Gladys doesn’t respond to threats, but she claims she does respond to bribes. In return for Sam’s watching her cat, while she’s in Acapulco, she agrees to take Sam to a guy who can get Sam a vessel. She takes him to a storage place. “It’s a portal to Hell.” The manager, Dennis –who was the creepy black magicks dude from Buffy Season 6- gives Sam a Nerf rifle that will send anything to Hell –dead, living, inanimate. Upon hearing of Greg’s deal with the Devil, he says it wouldn’t ever happen. He explains that the Devil can trick people, but he has “no dominion over the human heart.” He can’t undo true love.

Ben tells Cassidy about the baby. He says they have to break up, because he made a commitment to a crazy woman. He’s afraid of Sarah, and has to “live up to it.”

Sam realizes that he can get Andi back, because of her love for him. Sock, however, doesn’t believe that she loves Sam. Sam goes into the store and asks Andi if she loves him. She says, “Yeah, I think I love you.” Sam tells her they should run away where Gregs mojo can’t affect her. Greg calls, though, and she glibly tells him about their talking about going to “Buffalo”. Suddenly, the chainsaw killer is there, and tries to attack Andi. Sam helps her escape, and they hide from the killer. As the killer gets close, though, Sam sneezes. Andi gets away, but Sam trips, landing at the Devil’s feet:

Devil: Come with me, if you want to live. [snicker] Seriously, you’re screwed here.
Sam: [in the bar] You ass! That isn’t a soul. That’s Greg!
Devil: [clapping in little girl giddy fashion] Yeah! Isn’t it great?

The Devil explains that it’s really Greg’s ID. He had it manifest itself as the killer in Greg’s favorite slasher film. “Sometimes you just nail it!” He ecstatically explains to Sam that, now, Sam and Andi can be happy, but Greg’s ID will continue to manifest. Eventually, Greg will hack her up into little bits, unless Sam stops him. There’s only one way, though, to stop him. Kill Greg!

The boys go to Greg’s house to take him out, but the ammo that Ben brought was too small for the shotgun that he got from his dad. Greg comes to the door, and tells Sam they should talk. Greg tells Sam that he’ll never win, because he has the Devil on his side. The boys make him realize that the Devil’s not on anyone’s side. There’s always a catch, and his is that he can make Andi “love” him, but he can’t make her not love Sam. He realizes that he’s “so stupid”, and gets upset with himself. He gets so upset that he floats in the air, and his ID comes out in the form of the chainsaw killer. The boys –and Greg- escape to the bathroom. [So typical.] Sock clocks Greg, which, fortunately, makes the killer go away.

Sam is at Greg’s bedside in the hospital. Andi rushes in, but actually shows more concern for Sam. Greg says he can feel “that thing”.

At the Work Bench, Sarah finds Ben and Cassidy holding hands. Ben declares that he, too, is free to date. She gives in, saying they have to be discrete.

Sam is alone in the bar, when the Devil appears. He tells Sam that he and Andi are still in danger from Greg’s ID. Sam pulls the Get out of Jail Free card. He says he’s giving it to Greg. The Devil calls him a sucker for giving up eternity for a workplace crush.

Sam and Andi are back at the lookout point looking at the stars.
