Reaper Discussion: 1.17 The Leak

by Jonathan on May 14th, 2008

There’s only one more episode of Reaper, this season. I keep saying this, I know, but the writing has been so much better, since they’ve been able to explore new territory. The Leak is definitely another good episode, with plenty of interesting reveals.

This is sort of spoilery, so, if you’re

  • Although they got Andrew Airlie to stand a mile from the camera for his few seconds, I don’t know who was playing Sam’s long distance mother. It could have been Allison Hossack, Mrs. Oliver in the first few episodes, but she is on another show, and she’s not credited.
  • How can The Devil be Sam’s father?
  • If The Devil is Sam’s father, then he’s not Mr. and Mrs. Oliver’s first born. All together now, “Null and void.” The contract supposedly says that they have to give him their firstborn.
  • Am I missing something?
  • Why would the contract, written before they were pregnant with Sam, say anything about The Devil being Sam’s father? No one was his father, at the time the contract was written and signed.
  • How about that Ben’s last name? I could be wrong, but I think this is the first time we’ve actually heard his last name. I’ll have to watch it a thousandth time, but I don’t think the one with Ben’s grandmother even mentioned it.
  • You may have worried about Andi’s involvement getting old. I think it’s fine.
  • Is anyone else glad that Sarah is gone… for now, at least?
  • Is anyone else as ecstatic as I, that Gladys is not gone?

What did you think about The Leak? And let’s hear it for Mr. Ben Gonzalez!

hmm. I guess, the deal was that the Devil was to get the firstborn of Mr.Oliver such that Sam is now the Devil’s son?

Since the contract didn’t take effect until Sam was conceived, maybe it was then written up with the terms put in. Before that it hadn’t yet become binding, because if the Olivers never had children, there was no agreement. So the contract may have been drawn later. Once they became pregnant, the deal was sealed and the Devil may have turned up to tell them there was a contract and they were bound.

As for the contract being null and void if it clearly states that the Devil is Sam’s father, I don’t think it says that. I think the demon just assumed that since the missing pages all had to do with parentage. If there is something in there that Mr. Oliver didn’t want Sam to see, it could mean that there was really some other secret deal that he made to raise the Devil’s son and doesn’t want Sam to know about it. That may be the actual agreement so it wouldn’t be null and void.

So, who’s the source of Sam’s info about his contract? 1) His lying parents and 2) The Father of Lies. That contract could be with Sam’s mother, having her give the Devil a son in exchange for her husband’s life. It could be an incredibly complex recipe for cheese balls. We don’t know, mainly because, until Andi spoke up and sent the contract Tony’s way, nobody ‘objective’ had actually tried to read the dang thing.

Has anyone considered the fact ~ how did Sam’s parents actually “sell” their son’s soul… something that does not belong to you, you cannot sell, am I correct?

They might very well have agreed to give Sam to the devil in an agreement, but still Sam’s soul would be his own and not something that his parents could actually “sell”.

Something obviously lies in those missing pages… something his father does not want him to know. It is strange that the devil is so persistently nice to Sam for his efforts. First he gives him a ‘Get out of Hell free” card which Sam uses selflessly on someone else… and now he lets a Demon go [Gladys] on behalf of Sam.

Something is definitely awry with the whole situation… and I cannot wait to see the new episodes of reaper. So glad it has gotten the approval it needs for a Second season.
